Epilog
Upon reaching San Francisco, Kelli and Mike hopped onto BART for
the trip back to Richmond, then a taxi to the condo. Kevin and Sue
drove back to Sacramento. Mark and Laverne had a limo waiting to
take them back to Sacramento as well.
Sailboat, bus, metro, bus, jet, metro, taxi, home -- quite a 48-hour
stretch.
Since our return, we've had time to reflect on our Greek Isles adventure.
We were very fortunate to be part of a terrific crew. Everyone pitched
in as needed. Those among us who really enjoyed the sailing got
to partake in all aspects of managing the boat. Everyone took turns
at the helm. Those who wanted to manage the sails worked all the
lines and managed trim.
Special kudos to Mark, our chef. Mark prepared the meals we ate
aboard, and they were excellent. He also came aboard with a list
of good wines to try, and we did indeed have good wine the whole
time.
The camaraderie of the crew was terrific. We had enough "alone
time" to let us enjoy our time together. Being in port each
night so that we could wander off together or separately as desired,
though always meeting up for dinner together, meant that the small
confines of the boat were never a problem.
Impressions of Greece -- I think we are unanimous in a desire to
return to the Greek Islands. As our resident historian, Kevin enjoyed
seeing the places he's read much about. He wants to return to see
more of Greece's heritage. Thanks to Kevin, all of us enjoyed knowing a little more
about the history of places we visited.
The Greeks are very friendly, and the country is easy to visit.
The islands are beautiful, and the sailing spectacular. Towns in
the islands are quaint and historic. The harbors are fun, the waterfronts
are easy to enjoy and to use for starting points to see more of
each island.
Though we had just a few hours in Athens, it seems a fun and, obviously,
historic place to visit, easy to get around, and well worth a much
deeper exploration. Similarly, the brief time in Corfu left us wanting
much more time there.
In summary, we thoroughly enjoyed the trip and we thank David Kory
for organizing a unique, one-way charter that let us see so much
of Greece in the time allotted.
